Let the fight... begin!

I felt i had to share this in as many places as possible to raise awareness of the terrible dangers of using what is an easily available flea treatment.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/bobmartinawareness/

The link is to an FB page created by a cat owner who lost one of her pets to this 'treatment' and watched another pet suffer terribly.

I cant believe this product is still available with so many cats dying from the product. Please...please share this with any cat owners you know.

Try to brush Ruby?

Be my guest. This is what happens! Claws and Teeth!

In lieu of a real post--which I hope to write sometime soon--have some very cute kitty pictures!

This is Twix and Picasso (black kitty), both available for adoption at Chesapeake Cats and Dogs, cuddling:

Learn something new every day...

I recently bought some books on cat behavior, and it turns out I knew a lot less than I thought I did! One thing that seems pertinent to this community and is something I never knew before is that differing cats have differing scratching preferences. I never actually thought about it before but this makes sense. I mean I knew some cats prefer certain materials to scratch on, but whether or not a cat is a vertical scratcher or a horizontal scratcher...I never even knew! I figured I'd share, since maybe I'm not the only one who didn't know. ;) For those of you already in the know, forgive my ignorance, I'm a little thick sometimes.

For two years now, I occasionally scold my Persian...she's not destructive in the least, but once in a while she'll walk around right in front of me, RIGHT IN FRONT OF ONE OF THE CAT TOWERS, and claw the CARPET ON THE GROUND. I did not until recently understand this. According to some of what I've read, she is simply a cat who prefers a horizontal scratching surface. She may be doing it in front of me because scratching can be a very soothing, relaxing and rewarding experience, and being so closely bonded to me (seriously, she won't even look at my roommate 99% of the time, as far as she's concerned the sun rises and sets on my shoulders only) she may be trying to share that good scratchy feeling with me. I feel bad now, it must have baffled her to get scolded!

Once I knew better, I bought some horizontal scratching toys, and she's in heaven. It seems she prefers cardboard and carpet-covered things to rope or woven scratchies.

I'm pretty excited...we get a lot of people asking us in the salon how they can keep their cats from destroying their furniture and a common complaint I hear is "well yeah he has a scratching post but he won't use it!" Now I know to recommend not only differing materials, but different shapes (vertical OR horizontal). The more people who learn to live harmoniously with their clawed kitties, the better!

It has now been a little while since I read the book, and Yvaine (my horizontal scratcher) is much improved, no carpet clawing of any sort now that she has a whole new way to flex her claws! :)

Kitty Pic Spam!

First, news about Kosette: she went to the vet today for a wellness exam and seems to be in near-perfect health, with her weight being the main exception (she needs to lose about a pound).

Now, onto massive amounts of kitty pictures!

First, Santa kitty pictures:

As you can see, Kosette, Snowcrash, and Min were fairly cooperative. Cinnamon and Zathras, less so: under cut (+1 of Min) )

And some more that I've been meaning to post for a while now: Read more... )

As always, more pictures of our cats can be found at SugarTheCat.com.

Share time

I was just reading through recent posts and am inspired to share a couple of photos of my two rescued, fully clawed, half-Ragdoll boys. Bring on the kitties! )
